Running a Sex Offender Check in Greene County
The Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry is the official public statewide channel. Accept the conditions, then search by name or geography. A Greene County filter can narrow the statewide list, while the neighborhood map accepts an address or a map click. No separate Greene County registry database or alert app was verified.
Prepare a full name, approximate date of birth, city, or ZIP when known. For neighborhood awareness, begin with an address and review the map markers without assuming that distance equals risk. The registry is updated daily, but ISP warns that self-reported and changing information should be checked with the police department or sheriff named as registering agency.
Map Your Neighborhood Responsibly
The address map is useful for understanding published locations near a home, school route, park, or family destination. It is not a census of every offense and cannot establish that a person, street, or neighborhood is safe or unsafe. Markers open detail panels, so compare the profile's name, date of birth, status, offender type, information date, and registering agency before drawing a conclusion.
The official public search provides Greene County name, filter, and map controls.

The neutral search layout supports awareness without publishing a private registrant as an example.
Searching the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry
ISP maintains the registry, while city police and county sheriffs perform local registration. Search broadly first, then narrow by Greene County, city, ZIP, compliance status, offender type, incarceration or out-of-state category, or homeless flag. A "Location Unknown" result is a status requiring caution and verification, not evidence that an entry was removed.
- Open the ISP registry and read and accept its disclaimer and conditions of use.
- Enter a name or use city, ZIP, Greene County, status, type, homeless, or location-category filters.
- Compare plausible results using aliases, birth dates, physical details, status, and information date.
- Open the full profile, note the registering agency, and contact that agency when current location or status matters.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |

| Status / Homeless | Select / checkbox | No | Compliant, non-compliant, location unknown, or homeless filters |
| Offender Type | Select | No | Illinois statutory categories, not federal tiers |
| Map Your Neighborhood | Address / map | No | Address or map click opens nearby markers |
City Police or Sheriff Registration?
Registration occurs with city police when a person lives within municipal boundaries and with the sheriff in unincorporated Greene County. The public profile identifies the registering agency, which is the best local verification route. Carrollton, White Hall, and Roodhouse entries may therefore point to city police, while a rural address may point to the Greene County sheriff.
| Address setting | Registration office | Public follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Within city limits | City police department | Use the agency shown on the profile |
| Unincorporated Greene County | Greene County sheriff | Call 217-942-6901 |
| Cross-state concern | Other jurisdiction's registry | Use NSOPW to reach participating registries |
Do not assume the sheriff can correct a city-police registration or that a city department controls a rural entry.
What a Registry Profile Shows
A public profile gives identification, location, registration, and qualifying-offense context. It can include aliases and photo history, but the inspected public layout did not display every item law enforcement collects. Vehicle, workplace or school, scars or tattoos, statute number, conviction date, case number, and sentence were not shown in that inspected layout.
| Name & Aliases | Published name, aliases, date of birth, and alias birth dates. |
|---|---|
| Photo & Physical Description | Photo history plus height, weight, sex, and race where displayed. |
| Registered Address | Reported address or location status, including homeless or location-unknown indicators. |
| Offense Information | Crime, victim and offender-age information, and conviction county where displayed. |
| Illinois Category | Adult or child sex offender, sexual predator, or dangerous/violent-person category. |
| Registration Status | Compliance, information date, agency, initial/recent registration dates, and duration. |
Registry Is Not a Rap Sheet
A registry entry publishes the statutory subset required for community notification. It does not reproduce every arrest, court event, disposition, or conviction in an Illinois criminal-history transcript. For the underlying public prosecution, use Judici and the Greene County Circuit Clerk; for one's own complete reported Illinois history, use ISP Access and Review.
The ISP registry source shows the profile interface and official warnings.

Keeping those products separate prevents a registry classification from being mistaken for a full case history or individualized assessment.
Registration Requirements and Levels in Illinois
Illinois does not present its registry as federal Tier I, II, and III. It uses statutory categories with different durations and reporting frequencies. Changes generally must be reported within three days. Initial and annual registration fees are $100, and tolling or extensions can change an individual's end date.
| Level / Tier | Duration | Verification Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Sex offender | Generally 10 years | Generally annual |
| Sexual predator | Natural life | Annual |
| Sexually dangerous or violent person | Natural life | Every 90 days |
| First-degree-murder registrant | Life | Annual |
| Certain SORA violators | Applicable duration, with possible extensions | Every 90 days |
Location Unknown Is Not Removed
A profile marked "Location Unknown" remains part of the public registry. It signals that the displayed location cannot be treated as current, not that registration ended. Similarly, "Non-Compliant" is a published status that calls for agency verification, not public confrontation or independent enforcement.
Record the profile's information-as-of date, status, category, and listed registering agency before calling. Describe the concern precisely and ask whether the agency can verify the public entry. For an immediate threat, use emergency law-enforcement channels rather than waiting for a records response. For a possible data error, direct the question to the agency responsible for the entry instead of repeating the disputed address.
The ISP registry disclaimer explains that information can change and should be confirmed with the registering agency.

The warning is especially important when a search is used for immediate family or neighborhood safety planning.
NSOPW Adds the Cross-State Layer
The National Sex Offender Public Website federates participating state, territorial, and tribal registry sources. It is useful when a person may have moved or a Greene County search needs a broader geographic check. Return to the source jurisdiction's profile and registering agency for the current details.
The national portal provides the official cross-state supplement to a Greene County registry search.

NSOPW broadens geographic coverage but does not replace ISP or the local agency responsible for an Illinois entry.
Lawful Use and Community Notification
The registry supports personal, family, neighborhood, and community awareness. Read it together with the information date, published status, and agency contact. Illinois's Community Notification Law authorizes public access, while the ISP disclaimer directs users to verify changing information and forbids harassment or threats.
Illinois child-sex-offender restrictions include specified 500-foot rules involving schools, playgrounds, child-care facilities, and public parks under 720 ILCS 5/11-9.3. Those rules are fact-specific and should not be inferred solely from a map marker. The public registry does not decide whether a particular route, building, boundary, exception, or person's circumstances violate a restriction. Bring a concrete concern to the registering agency or appropriate law-enforcement office.
VINELink may provide custody-status notifications, but it is not a Greene County proximity-alert service and does not correct registry data. Registry status, custody status, and a criminal court docket answer separate questions. Use ISP for the public registry, the listed local registering agency for verification, and the relevant court or correctional custodian for those other records.
Use registry information lawfully: Misusing registry information to harass or threaten a registrant or household is a crime under the Illinois Sex Offender Community Notification Law, 730 ILCS 152. Contact law enforcement about an immediate safety concern.
